Abu Dhabi GP witnessed an absolute heartbreak for Sergio Perez in his last race for Racing Point this season. He won the first race of his career last weekend at Sakhir Grand Prix. However, in the final race of the season, the Mexican had to retire his car because of an engine failure.

Sergio Perez started the race at the end of the grid for taking on new power unit elements. According to a report, it was a change of internal combustion engine, turbocharger, and MGU-H that had him start at the back of the grid.

The maiden race-winner last weekend started this race from P20. He overtook six cars as he claimed up to P14 by the twelfth lap. Perez would have backed himself up as he won the race last weekend, climbing the positions from the end of the grid. He fell back to P20 after being involved in an accident with Leclerc.

McLaren become the favorites for a P3 finish

Going into this race, the Mclaren were 12 points off the Racing Point on the constructors’ championship. Racing Point claimed a double podium finish last weekend as Sergio and Stroll finished P1 and P3, respectively.

They were the favorites going into this weekend. However, McLaren out-qualified the Racing Point cars on Saturday qualifying. After Sergio Perez’s retirement, Lance Stroll became the sole driver carrying Racing Point’s baton for the P3 position.

Meanwhile, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz both appear to be driving the McLaren to P3. Norris is currently at P6 and Sainz is at P8, while Stroll is at P10. If this remains to be the situation, McLaren will take Racing Point over for the P3 position.

On the drivers standing, Sergio Perez is in the P4 position with 125 points. Daniel Ricciardo is at 112 points. With Sergio Perez out, a podium finish for Ricciardo would secure a P4 finish for him on the drivers’ championship.
