Mercedes has launched their 2022 Challenger, W13 on February 18. During the event, team boss Toto Wolff and drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were seen praising the new machine. Subsequently to the unveiling the team took their new W13 for a shakedown. However, what came next is what caught more attention than the shakedown itself.
During the 2021 season, Mercedes recruited George Russell to drive in the place of Valtteri Bottas this season. The Briton joined the Brackley-based team on a long-term contract. Although the former William’s man has driven for Mercedes before, this will be the first time he’ll be driving a Mercedes car, specifically designed for him.

After the W13 shakedown, the 8-time constructors uploaded a video to their Twitter handle. In this video, Toto Wolff is seen talking about the car. He shared how the car ran well and how both his drivers are feeling confident with their new machine for the 2022 season.

Russell finally has his car at Mercedes
During the interview, Russell comes in to share the screen with the team boss. Toto welcomes George and asks the new recruit to tell the fans if he likes the car. Having not properly understood the question, the 24-year-old went on to ask the fans, “Do you like the car?” This ended up becoming a rather humorous conversation.
However, the Briton quickly realized that the question was for him and said that he liked the car. Both Toto and George then wrapped up the video by saying, “see you in Barcelona.”

An entire session of pre-season testing is to take place in Barcelona, Spain from February 23 to 25. This time, Mercedes will have George partner with Lewis Hamilton as they look to defend their Constructor’s Championship.

Interestingly, George has driven for the eight times constructor’s champions back in 2020. When Hamilton was out due to Covid-19, Russell drove his car and was almost on the way to give Mercedes a victory. Sadly, a tire failure and a mistake from the team’s pit crew kept him from getting his first victory for the silver arrows.
