Being a part of Formula 1 for more than 16 years, Lewis Hamilton has experienced possibly all kinds of emotions. Although, one should never dismiss new possible experiences. Keeping that in mind, Hamilton, who finished second in the Hungarian GP, could’ve experienced a new level of anger thanks to Lance Stroll.

The Mercedes man, while running in second, lapped Stroll. However, the Aston Martin man, who finished the race at P11, felt he had more pace than Hamilton. So after allowing Hamilton to pass him as per the rules, Stroll wanted to unlap himself and tried to overtake the Mercedes man.

Before attempting the overtake on Hamilton, Stroll took permission from his team on the radio. He asked, “Can I unlap Hamilton?”

To which his trackside engineer replied, “If you’ve got the pace mate, yes you can!”

After getting the green light from his team, the Aston Martin man attempted the overtake on lap 50 of 70. During this attempt, Stroll was wheel to wheel against Hamilton’s W13. During the attempt, Stroll came dangerously close to crashing into Hamilton and ruining both of their races.

However, a crash wasn’t written in either driver’s luck at the Hungaroring as Hamilton pulled away from the Canadian. Stroll made another slight attempt but never got as dangerously close to Hamilton as his first attempt.

Had the two made contact, Hamilton would not have taken it kindly and it would’ve become a much-talked-about incident. Luckily, nothing of the sort happened. However, the Aston Martin pilot needs a lesson from the Ferrari Spaniard when it comes to unlapping etiquettes.

Lewis Hamilton lets Carlos Sainz pass at the Styrian GP in 2021

A similar situation came to pass at the Styria GP from the 2021 season. During that race, Carlos Sainz felt he had more pace than Hamilton after being lapped by the Brit. However, instead of just going for an overtake, Sainz and Ferrari communicated their request to Mercedes and Hamilton.

When told by his trackside engineer, “And you can try to unlap yourself,” Sainz replied. “I can’t. It will be very risky for both.”

Following this conversation, Bono told Hamilton, “Ok Lewis, we’re happy to let Sainz go”. And that is exactly what Hamilton did as Sainz, after the overtake, said, “I owe Lewis one!”
