Formula 1 is an extreme sport. Unlike any other outdoor sport, F1 has a different level of risk involved. However, with the latest technologies and safety in place, the risk has comparatively decreased. Had it not been the case, Robert Kubica may have suffered a serious injury and missed more than one race in 2007.

The former Alfa Romeo driver suffered one of the worst crashes in the sport’s history, but was not seriously harmed. That’s where the safety standards of an F1 car lie.

How did Robert Kubica crash?

At the Canadian Grand Prix in 2007, Kubica had a scary experience. The BMW Sauber driver approached the hairpin on lap 27 and touched the Toyota of Jarno Trulli. He then lost part of his front wing and hit a lump in the grass by the side of the track. This saw the nose of his car lifted into the air. Kubica’s BMW then hit the sidewall and cartwheeled across the track before striking the opposite wall.

The BMW Sauber car was severely damaged as it hit the wall at around 142 mph (75G per millisecond). Marshalls removed Kubica under the Safety car and he was taken to a hospital in Montreal. Luckily, the Polish driver was “relatively unscathed” and was talking “almost normally.”

Kubica missed the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis where Sebastian Vettel replaced him, but he returned for the French GP in the following race week.
