The Mercedes F1 team famous for its mantra, hard work, is shooting through the clouds. They seem unstoppable every year; they start strong and end stronger with nearly 150 points ahead of their rivals. Well, it is not just hard work that has brought them here.
On this week’s podcast the Chequered Flag, Toto Wolff revealed the several ways Mercedes tries to help everyone on board. After claiming their seventh constructor’s title, Wolff disclosed his team’s secret.
The Mercedes Principal stated that the sole reason is that they can’t afford to slack. Being a team that Mercedes is, it is their duty to deliver every weekend. To keep up that standard, extra care is necessary.

“The environment is tremendously challenging because we are being benchmarked 21 times a year. Staying energized physically and mentally fit is not trivial.
“What we are trying to do is have the best support and cultures in that environment.
“We are on the crossroads between a regular business and a sports team and we have tried to push the boundaries by looking into all kinds of psychological coaching and physical coaching,” concluded Wolff.

Mercedes and meditation – a challenge for the team
Toto Wolff believes that using all that the team has to offer can be the only way to winning. From exercising and polishing their physical strength to looking after nutrition. Although it sounds impossible, Mercedes does it every week.
Meditation and F1 do not sound very cohesive with each other. However, Toto Wolff made it possible. Mercedes rolled out meditation to 1000 engineers, and they started it as a challenge.

“There is a funny story in that relation. I’m actually quite into meditation since many years and I’m an active practitioner.

“But when we started we chose a group where we believe they will be the most stubborn hardline engineers that will think this is some kind of tree hugging exercise,” explained Toto.
“We put them all in a room and there was about 20 of us. You will be surprised to hear that after the full course which was 6 or 7 sessions, the ones that we thought would drop out immediately they did the course till the end and actually improved. Their mental wellbeing and their performance also,” concluded Toto Wolff.
