7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton signed a two-year contract with Mercedes. He will continue to race with the German team till the end of the 2023 season. He is currently in the middle of a title battle with Red Bull’s ax Verstappen.

The British driver is trailing the young Dutchman by 32 points and has not won a race since Spain earlier in the season. So, the question for Mercedes now arises- should they continue working on the 2021 car or abandon title hopes and go for developing 2022 car?

” I think Lewis would struggle if he looks at the rest of the season thinking I don’t have the speed in the car to match Red Bull. I’m sure they will be trying to finesse the car just like Red Bull have done to their car,” said Brundle.

Mercedes needs to make decisions for its 2022 cars

Martin Brundle believes that Mercedes have to make a decision whether to keep working on their 2021 car or think big term by developing their 2022 car and dominating the sport again.

With the cost caps now and with the resource the teams have and the dramatically new 2022 car, they need to keep working on that. Because that car would be in play for a number of years.
