“We’re Just Very Lucky He’s With Us”- Williams F1 “Nervous” to Lose George Russell From the Team

By now, no one should doubt the oodles of talent that Williams’ George Russell possesses. However, last year the young Briton couldn’t quite show us how good he is because the FW42 was totally inept.
But this year, just three races in, Russell would have already left Mercedes fans drooling in the hope that he’ll be joining the Silver Arrows sooner rather than later.
Nevertheless, Russell, who is a Mercedes junior driver, will continue to be on Williams’ payroll until the 2021 season. And this makes the Deputy Team Principal of the Grove-based outfit, Claire Williams, feel very lucky.

Being the latest personality to make an appearance on the ‘F1 nation‘ podcast, Williams said, “We’re just very lucky he’s in the team with us. I was nervous because he is so good.
“I didn’t want to lose him. But equally, I’m not one of those people who will stand in someone’s way when they have got a great opportunity.
“I think I proved that with Valtteri Bottas when he went to Mercedes a number of years ago. But that hasn’t happened, and I’m pleased that George is staying with us. We have him for another year and he is a joy to have around the place.”

It may not be pleasant for Williams fans to hear, but the fact remains that Russell is not going to be able to perform to the full extent of his abilities with Williams.

It is something that even Claire agrees with, but she thinks that this experience will only make him a better driver.
She said, “Having been in a team that isn’t having the best time will make him stronger. He hasn’t had it easy and it will put him in a better place in the future. It will make him a better driver.”
Despite not having earned a point thus far in the campaign, he has been impressive, especially in qualifying. In the last two races, Russell has managed to get into Q2 but has been unlucky during the races.
