As the saying goes, greatness recognizes greatness and Lewis Hamilton had recently experienced such recognition. After a stunning race in Brazil, the nation’s icon- Pele, appreciated Hamilton’s racecraft. Not only did he praise the victor, but also gave him a special token of appreciation.

Hamilton hoisting the Brazilian flag was a very touching move for the Brazilians. 30 years after Ayrton Senna’s home race victory, the flag waved proudly again. The football legend’s sentiments reflected what all of Brazil felt.

Pele’s message was heartfelt. “A wonderful performance. A day as glorious for you, Lewis, as for us Brazilians. It’s great to see an F1 driver raise our flag on the podium. Thank you for being who you are.” To add to the praise, the message on his gift to Hamilton read, “We’re world champions. From your friend, Pele.”

Surely adding to the incredible feeling of victory for Hamilton, whose weekend was about Brazil. From the helmet tribute to the flag on the podium, Hamilton emulated his F1 hero to the fullest- a sight worth appreciating by everyone.

The weekend started with Hamilton paying tribute to his hero with a beautiful helmet. Carrying Senna and Brazil’s colors with him, the win in Brazil was destined to happen. Looking at the crowds in the Interlagos, one would confuse them for Hamilton’s fans back home in Silverstone. Such was the energy in the grandstands for Lewis Hamilton.

Almost like a home race for Hamilton, the fans saw Senna in their favorite driver. The crowds sang their names together, making it a touching moment for Hamilton. A fan at the race said, “Senna has always been his idol … every time he comes to Brazil, he brings a special homage.”

Hamilton reflected the love, having had an emotional weekend in Brazil. “I’m so, so grateful for the incredible support I’ve had this weekend. I’ve not had it since Silverstone. Obrigado (thank you) Brasil.”

Now, Hamilton heads to the last three races of the season, one hopes to see the same vigor Hamilton imbued in Brazil. There’s an eighth championship up for grabs and Hamilton would look to cement his name in the history books.
