Since that evening in Abu Dhabi, every F1 fan ponders upon the rules and regulations of the sport. The race director, Michael Masi, allowed only the lapped cars between the championship rivals to overtake the leader, instead of all the cars. This presented the Dutch driver with a perfect opportunity to win the race and the championship.
Until now, the details of the race director call in the final Grand Prix remain unclear. Nevertheless, Masi has shared his experience post that race in Abu Dhabi. He said “There were some dark days,” Masi told News Corp. “Absolutely, I felt like I was the most hated man in the world. I got death threats. People saying they were going to come after me and my family.”
“Not even family and friends. I only talked to my close family – but very briefly,” he added.
“michael masi didn’t interpret his rules the way they have been written, and that cost lewis hamilton the 8th championship, he gave it to max verstappen” ted you are so brave my king pic.twitter.com/i1XKrHt5sx

The Aussie signed an NDA with the FIA that prohibits him from sharing details regarding the Abu Dhabi GP. Yet, the F1 community gets an understanding from the official report that states “[Masi] was acting in good faith and to the best of his knowledge given the difficult circumstances, particularly acknowledging the significant time constraints for decisions to be made and the immense pressure being applied by the teams.”
The ‘human error’ possibly ended up costing Hamilton the record-breaking 8th world title and announced Verstappen as the new world champion. It was one of the biggest controversial incidents in the sport’s history for which we might never know the exact details.
F1 Twitter reacts to the NDA agreement over the Lewis Hamilton-Max Verstappen 2021 battle
The F1 management choosing to sign an NDA over releasing the details has set up a stir on social media. Here is how F1 Twitter reacted to the sneaky FIA move to sign an NDA with the former race director.
Very interesting to have confirmation that Masi has signed an NDA with the @fia. So much for openness and transparency. What is it that they’re trying to hide?
No response to the multitude of #RaceAgainstManipulation reports, either. #F1

Masi having to sign an NDA makes AD '21 seem even more suspicious than it already was, what are the FIA hiding?
— Jamez (@F1Jamez) July 31, 2022
The NDA was necessary because the @fia paid Masi a handsome sum to keep his mouth shut and not sue them for wrongful dissmissal or something… we know people above him were sanctioning the cheating.. *cough cough Jean Todt et al #F1 #F1xed

if masi’s decision making at AD21 was legal and within his right, why did he have to sign a NDA preventing him from discussing his decision making 🤯🤯🤯
— kimi (@hamiltuhn) July 31, 2022
In the light of the Australian Telegraph publishing news Michael Masi signed an NDA to not discuss his decisions in Abu Dhabi '21, it is rather clear #F1 and #FIA did not want him publicly revealing whom he talked to or what orders were received during those last laps. #F1xed

Michael Masi's decision making was so correct and legal he signed a legally binding NDA promising to never talk about his brilliance
