Mugello is set to host its first-ever Formula One Grand Prix on the 13th of September this year. The race track in Tuscany is owned by Ferrari and was used for testing shortly before the 2020 season commenced.

The fastest ever lap time set at this circuit is 1’18.704. It was set by Rubens Barrichello, 16 years ago. Barrichello, who holds the record for the most races driven in F1, set the record in a Ferrari F2004 sporting a V10 engine.

In comparison, the fastest lap record set by an F1 car is 1’21.035. A record that was set by Romain Grosjean in his 2012 spec Lotus.

However, according to Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto, the 2020 F1 cars will not only surpass Grosjean’s record but could also break the one set by Barrichello.

According to RaceFans, the Maranello-based outfit’s Team Principal said, “We did a very similar lap (to Barrichello) with full tank, not pushing etcetera. So I’m pretty curious to see when we set the pole, I’m pretty sure it will be a record.”

Three races into the season, it has become pretty clear that Ferrari won’t be the team to break the aforementioned record. That honor will most likely be bestowed upon either of the two Mercedes drivers. Nevertheless, you get what Binotto means.

If Ferrari were getting close to the record during their tests with a 2018  spec car, surely the record would be eclipsed, come race day at Mugello. However, Binotto reveals that it would be quite tough a race for drivers.

He said, “There is a long straight, but there is just fast corners before the main straight. It would be very demanding because of the fast corners. So it’s quite interesting to see all the Formula 1 cars of today of going through there.

“We are used to seeing Moto GP there but I think that Formula 1 is at least 20 seconds faster. (So) I think it will be amazing.”

The race at Mugello, officially called the Tuscan Grand Prix, will play host to Ferrari’s 1000th F1 race. For the Scuderia team’s sake, one would hope that they make it a memorable one by finishing on the podium.
