Strategy and quick decisions awarded team Red Bull with an exceptionally executed win in Monaco. And the one person responsible for the miraculous turnaround of events is Hannah Schmitz. In a high-pressure and fast-paced environment, the strategist carried out the brilliant decision of calling Sergio Perez to the pits, which was timed just perfectly.

Heavy rain initially struck the Monaco GP as the race saw delays. With the track being almost impossible to overtake on, strategy and undercuts were the most stressed upon factors. After following Pierre Gasly‘s early adoption of intermediates, Schmitz made a quick decision. She called in Perez on Lap 17 to change his tires to inter. Red Bull then patiently waited for their drivers to change into fresher tires. Timing it perfectly, they made a quick pit stop after Lap 22, as Perez rejoined as the race lead.

With Schmitz being a major factor of this year’s Perez Monaco win, Leclerc this time lost out to his own team’s confusion about the Red Bull strategy.

Commenting on Hannah’s brilliance and sole decision-making, Red Bull team boss Helmut Marko congratulated her. He said, “We were all exceptional, but if we won it was mainly due to Hannah, she was our head of strategy here. You calmly and clearly analyzed the data and also allowed us to put Verstappen in front of Leclerc.”

Notably, this is Hannah’s thirteenth year with the Austrian team. She currently acts as their Principal Strategy Engineer. Schmitz also has one monumental win to her name; the 2019 Brazilian GP with Max Verstappen. Astoundingly, a three-stop tactic was her brainchild, as it rewarded her with a podium representation alongside Verstappen.
