An unwavering dedication to sports and beer, lots of it, is what one thinks when it comes to Australia. Daniel Ricciardo, a proud Australian, has immortalized a peculiar tradition that is dear to beer and sports fans in the land down under. That tradition is the ‘shoey’. Shoey, for the uninitiated, has almost become a tradition for Australian sportspersons, who celebrate by pouring beer or celebratory champagne in their shoe and drinking from it. Harry Styles, who recently performed in Perth, channeled his inner Honey Badger and left the fans in shock with the celebration. That was despite the fact that he once slammed the “tradition” for being “disgusting”.

Ricciardo drank from his shoe for the first time for the F1 audience when he secured the P2 finish at the 2016 German GP. Ever since then, he hasn’t missed any opportunity to perform one on the podium. While it has been a while since he got the chance to do it, his fellow Australians in different disciplines have kept the tradition alive. Most recently, we saw the WWE NXT superstar Grayson Waller do the shoey after winning the inaugural Iron Survivor NXT match.

Harry Styles channels his inner Daniel Ricciardo on stage

Harry is currently on his Australia and New Zealand leg of ‘Love On Tour’. The last place he performed was Perth. While the shoey sent the Australian fans into a delightful frenzy, the American fans did not take too well to it.

It is kind of a surprise that he actually did that given the fact that he, as per People.com, once blasted the tradition in a video saying, “This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever witnessed.”

Anyways, other fans came to his rescue and educated their American counterparts telling them how iconic shoeys are in Australia.
