Williams F1 Make a Major Change in Investment Strategy Amidst Financial Woes

While the future of Williams in Formula One may not be certain, they are making sure that they are well prepared for the 2020 season. The Williams team has had two horrific campaigns in F1 recently. They have also faced financial problems off the track, so much so, that they are planning to sell the team. Nevertheless, for the time being, they still remain in F1 and are hoping to bounce back this year and as such, have signed a new managing director along with channelling their funds to purchase a new technical team.

The most recent addition to the Williams F1 team is Simon Roberts, from Mclaren. He will take the role of managing director. In an interview with Motorsport.com, Claire Williams said, “Simon is a fantastic addition to the team and we’re really excited. He’s obviously got a fantastic background and in his role will coordinate between technical and operations. We think Simon’s going to do a really great job.”

“We have also strengthened our technical team, following a period of restructuring last year that we undertook. David Warner has come in as our chief designer and Jonathan Carter has come in from Renault as our deputy chief designer and head of design. We’ve been working very hard on the restructuring of our technical and operations groups, and for us, Simon is the final piece of that work that we have been doing.”

Additionally, she said, “For us at the moment, the structure is as we have always wanted it to be. We’re very happy with it and we’re going to let it play its course. We think it will do a good job, so there are no plans right here, right now to be bringing any further people into our engineering side of business.”
Williams will be hoping that these signings can make them competitive again. They’ll also be hoping to get more than the 6 points they accumulated in their last two seasons. Can 2020 change their fortunes? We’ll soon find out.
