It was not too long ago when the whole saga of team principals jumping ship one after the other began. Among them was McLaren boss Andreas Seidl, who joined Sauber as their new CEO. Replacing him was none other than his own racing director, Andrea Stella. While it is a big gamble on Zak Brown’s part to place the entire team’s responsibility on a man with no experience in the top position, the trust is not unfound given his experience of working with the likes of Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso in the past. Now Lando Norris has come out in Stella’s support, showing full faith in his ability to serve at the top.

2023 is a season of many new things for McLaren. A lot has changed, while a lot still needs to change. While Stella taking up the TP role is one, Oscar Piastri replacing Daniel Ricciardo is another. However, what needs to change is the downward trend in their performance in the last 2 seasons. Oscar Piastri, however, is not too confident, and that is not a good sign for the team.

Lando, on the other hand, is raring to go under Andrea’s leadership. Letting his feelings known about the new boss during the launch of MCL60, Norris told media, including RaceFans, “I have full trust in what he’s capable of doing and can also bring a different perspective. He’s a guy who was a race engineer so he also sees and understands things very much from a racing point of view as an individual, as Andreas did in many ways.”

“From what he’s done, you know he’s not been in the position very long, but he’s done a very good job with boosting the team, making sure that morale is up, especially so early on in the season. Giving a very clear and concise plan for combating our issues, and our weaknesses and improving in all of these areas.”

Team CEO Zak Brown too hailed his new TP for the smooth transition since Seidl’s departure.

Zak Brown is confident Andrea Stella can guide Lando Norris and McLaren toward a positive trend

Ever since the P3 finish in the 2020 season, McLaren has continued to struggle. In 2021 they finished 4th and then found it difficult to adapt to the new regulations last year, eventually finishing 5th. That needs to change because a driver of Norris’ caliber could grow restless with the lack of championship wins soon. The team’s CEO feels Stella is capable of delivering.

Norris will hope the team will hit the ground running right from the beginning, with testing in Bahrain right around the corner. If not the championship wins, at least the progress of a place or two will be a positive sign.
