One of the biggest reasons experts believe Lewis Hamilton is hanging on in F1 is because of the coveted 8th world championship title. Many even tipped he would quit after achieving the feat in 2021. However, a decision from race director Michael Masi, which the FIA later admitted was a “human error” prevented that from happening. A year following that tested his mental strength as for the first time in his F1 career, Hamilton went without a race win. However, as he begins treading an upward path now, a former F1 driver believes the Mercedes ace has recovered from the tragedy.

Last year, Hamilton wrote a heartfelt note for his fans on Instagram, updating them on his mental health. He recalled how agonizing the period was and how he had to continue to fight every day to come out of it. He then reminded his fans that it was okay to feel that way and urged them to continue fighting like he did.

Right from the start of the 2022 season, Mercedes struggled to cope with the ground-effect regulations. The car faced porpoising issues and lacked the pace to win races. The year turned out to be even more depressing for Hamilton as his newly inducted teammate, George Russell, beat him on points. Russell also bagged his maiden Grand Prix win during the campaign which also turned out to be Mercedes’ only one for the season. The 7-time champion, however, looks to be recovering in 2023 as he secured the team’s only podium finish in Melbourne. He is also ahead of Russell by 16 points currently.

Analyzing his recovery while speaking with F1 Maximaal recently, Jan Lammers said, “Of course it is great fun if you manage to restore yourself to a new height. That is of course super nice. And I can also imagine that Lewis is enjoying his driving again, because he has gotten better. As a sportsman that is a great experience, if you notice that you have learned something. It’s actually been renovated. I think Lewis was probably a little bit mentally injured and has now recovered.” [Translated using Google]

As Mercedes continues on its path to find ways to climb back to the top, Hamilton has pledged his loyalty to the team. That is despite the fact that he is 38 and probably does not have much time left to win the world championship for the 8th time.

Hamilton equates the Abu Dhabi loss to his first heartbreak

As per the tabloids that keep track of his dating history, Lewis went out with model Danielle Lloyd in 2002. That was during his F3 days. The pair dated for just 6 months, but Danielle admitted that it was love at first sight. They remained friends after the breakup and Lewis even attended the pageant when they crowned her Miss England in 2004.

Recalling the 2021 Abu Dhabi loss in a recent interview with ESPN, Hamilton told, “Ultimately that feeling never really truly leaves you. It’s like when you think about your first love, it will always be that first love and first heartbreak.”

“Abu Dhabi, the scar is there and there will always be that memory. Even though I reprogrammed my mind, I think it still took me the whole year to really push through it because we were straight back into work,” he added. “It wasn’t a quick thing.”
