The way Fernando Alonso is driving, one might call 2023 his redemption season. With the same Championship-winning attitude and 20+ years of experience, Alonso should be unstoppable, right? Well, according to a former F1 driver, not really. As the 41-year-old’s biological barrier is blamed for his Monaco qualifying slip, Lewis Hamilton’s theory regarding recovery is also put in danger. Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin had a subpar Spanish GP, as the AMR 23 seemed to be struggling during the race. Nevertheless, anything less than a podium feels like a subpar performance for the green team after the heroic start to the 2023 season. Lewis Hamilton recently suggested better training methods, a great diet, and similar factors are the reasons why he and Alonso are still able to compete at such a high level despite being the oldest drivers on the F1 Grid. Hamilton also emphasized the importance of recovery and how it has been helping him.

Fernando Alonso qualified in P2 in Monaco and finished the race in P2 as well. Qualifying is everything in Monaco, as overtaking is almost impossible on the tight street circuit. Alonso qualified less than a tenth behind Max Verstappen. Nevertheless, former F1 driver David Kennedy suggests that the AMR23 had the pace to grab the pole. He explains how people slow down with age and the Spaniard’s age would’ve naturally slowed him down, taking the Monaco pole away from him. This puts Hamilton’s recovery and fitness theory at a greater risk.

David Kennedy said, “I think he had a car that could have put it on pole in Monaco. It was just that last several hundredths of a second. He is 41 years old and the eldest driver on the grid. Simple biology will have slowed Alonso by enough to have missed out on the pole. It is just nature’s way and you can’t beat it. There are drivers and whether they take it on one, two, or even three years – it just slips away. We’ve seen it time and time again over the years. It’s a hard fact but that’s nature’s course.”

Whilst Fernando Alonso might’ve lost the crucial tenths due to his age, he very well makes up for it with his experience. Edo Bendinelli suggests that Fernando Alonso went back to his fitness regime from 2005, the year in which he last won a championship. With all the data available, a green light was given to the old fitness regime. Bendinelli explained Alonso’s muscle characteristics as he advised the reasons for the consistent competitive performances put up by Alonso’s body and muscles. 

According to Mundodeportivo, Edo Bendinelli said, “We have all your data for each year. We went to the base in 2005. Fernando was a reactive person as a muscular quality, he could perfectly be a 100-meter smooth runner, he is really capable of squeezing a lot of strength and having a lot of speed. That is a birth muscle characteristic that is inevitably lost a little over the years.
