Pierre Gasly is one of the best F1 drivers at executing overtakes. But his stint at Red Bull after replacing Daniel Ricciardo in 2019 was not great. Max Verstappen overshadowed his performances which eventually led to his demotion. But with Daniel Ricciardo now replacing Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri, Red Bull has come under fire citing Gasly’s staggering success after getting demoted.

Despite knowing that Red Bull is ruthless with underperforming drivers, it comes as a surprise when any such driver is laid off and replaced. And this time, such an action has been received with more excitement than scorn. Ricciardo replacing de Vries at AlphaTauri is probably the news of the month, if not the year. But according to F1’s chief statistician, Sean Kelly, like Gasly has proved his caliber in AlphaTauri and Alpine, de Vries got no time to prove himself.

Kelly said in a Twitter post,“If you’d have judged Pierre Gasly on the basis of his 12 races at Red Bull, you’d think he was s***. I often say that getting into/remaining in F1 is sometimes as much about being in fashion as about skill. De Vries was in fashion after Monza last year, now he’s out of fashion.”

But with McLaren’s overperformance coming out of nowhere and a double DNF for Alpine, the former overtook the latter in the Constructors’ Championship. And McLaren now has 12 points more than Alpine. And with that, Gasly now has to also deal with more competition to get in Q3, let alone scoring points.

The Frenchman has been getting outqualified by his teammate, Esteban Ocon this year. The British GP could have been a chance to redeem himself. But after Lance Stroll bumped Aston Martin into the rear of Gasly’s A523, his ambitions were shattered. He had to retire his car with a broken suspension. The Alpine driver could have finished in the points but it was not to be.
