The relationship between Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton has been affected since the driver’s Ferrari move. The 7-time world champion is yet to depart from the team and in a losing fight for the championship, F1 pundits believe it’s the best thing Hamilton could do. Fernando Alonso, on the other hand, another world champion, was in Alpine before he came to Aston Martin. But for many of you who don’t yet know, there is more background information to that story.

Ever since Red Bull became the hottest team on the grid, many drivers have been fighting for the seat next to Verstappen. The main benefit of that is being able to drive the RB20 car, which is Adrian Newey’s brainchild. Newey is known for his designs and has created many world championship-winning cars over his years in the sport. Currently, in Red Bull, he is one of the most wanted team members on the grid and to be able to take advantage of his engineering, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were reported to want to join the Milton Keynes outfit.

According to a recent report, both Hamilton and Alonso had reached a point in their careers where they thought their team would not be enough to win the world championship. The report states that Fernando Alonso had a meeting with Christian Horner to see if things would work out with Red Bull.

Christian Horner has also come forth to say that Lewis Hamilton was interested in signing with them, however, the Mercedes driver denied it. This was all done while going behind the back of Toto Wolff. While it would be interesting to watch a world-champion duo on Red Bull, it comes with many problems. Having two world champions driving for a team won’t come cheap and that’s a cost in multiple millions of dollars the team will have to bear.

With two drivers both fighting for the championship, it might hinder the performance and lead to a loss of points. For now, the strategy that has been working is focusing on the winning driver and the secondary one being there to help. While this is a rare case and has only been seen by Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, Verstappen would be better off without any competition for his title and throne on the podium.

The grid will be half-empty by the end of the season and with Alonso renewing his contract, there are only 7 confirmed seats. For the time being, Sergio Perez is looking to continue his role as long as he delivers performance. After coming in 5th at the Australian Grand Prix, Red Bull has been on an alert which might cost the Mexican his seat.

That being said, there are many skilled drivers on the grid without a seat and it is a decision for Christian Horner to make ultimately. The two Racing Bulls’ drivers are currently on standby for the seat while Perez continues to fight to keep his contract and drive with Verstappen.

Daniel Ricciardo would be a good partner to Max Verstappen too, but he might challenge the dutchman and fight for race wins. This might not work well with the management, so there are fewer chances of that happening. When it comes to drivers from other teams, almost everyone is a strong candidate, but Red Bull would want only the best in their car. Carlos Sainz Jr has still to find a new seat, but will he go back to Red Bull? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
