F1 Throwback: Watch a Young Lewis Hamilton Reject the Possibility of Driving for McLaren in F1

Back in 2006, a young Lewis Hamilton was steadily rising up the ranks and competing in GP2. After a lacklustre start to his season, including a disqualification, the young British driver managed to pull up his socks. In other words, he went on to deliver back-to-back wins at the Nurburgring GP2 race.

When he spoke after his second win, he admitted that it was a ‘fantastic achievement’. He insisted that he and the ART team worked hard in pre-season testing to get where they were. Although he was disappointed by the previous races’ results, Hamilton was glad to have two wins as a perfect reward for their hard work.

The interviewer noted Hamilton’s long-term association with the McLaren F1 team. It is no secret that the British marquee provided a springboard for Hamilton’s career, and their partnership would continue even longer.

However, Lewis Hamilton insisted that he is only focused on his GP2 career. Although he entered the series as a rookie, Hamilton found himself in a championship-winning position. He did acknowledge that McLaren provided incredible support over the years and was truly grateful.

When he spoke about the prospect of graduating to F1, he confessed that he did not have a clue of where his future lay. So, he surmised that he may end up somewhere in the midfield and not cashing all his chips on a McLaren seat. Of course, he went on to win the GP2 title in 2006, his debut season.

Who would have thought that that fresh-faced youngster in GP2 would become a 6-time world champion. In the end, he made his F1 debut in 2007, incidentally with McLaren, and took the title a year later. After a reasonably successful McLaren stint, Mercedes managed to lure him and he found greener pastures there.

The proof of the pudding was an additional 5 world championships to his name. He went on a championship-winning streak from 2014 until 2019, with only Nico Rosberg breaking it in 2016. Aside from that blip, he and Mercedes largely went unchallenged in both championship
