Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini endured a poor South American clay-court run. The 31-year old was downed in the opening round in three back-to-back tournaments. In a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, he slumped to a straight set loss to Felix-Auger Aliassime.

Fognini feels that there is a need for him to take a breather from playing tennis. But he will be maing an appearance at Indian Wells and may partner Novak Djokovic in the doubles.

“I need some time at home and take a rest”, Fognini confessed. “If I will have some more mental energy I will be back in Indian Wells otherwise I will take some time off.”

“I just retired from doubles. I have a little ankle pain and I’d rather not play. But I want to speak about the match and not invent excuses. He (Aliassime) will have a great future, he played better than me. I tried with what I have, which is less at the moment.”

“In this part of the season, I lost my game. Last week I lost a very bad match and here I came with no goals, just thinking to play and trying to find my tennis again. I had five or six break points and I did not manage to break him.”

He reflected on another of his losses, this time to Jaume Munar in Buenos Aires. He said that he did entertain the thought of coming back home. But he reminded himself that with all of life’s complications, all he can do is face them head on.

Fognini stressed on the need to turn his chapter around and do it in a short time. Then he would stay with his family and ruminate on his next move. His next predicted course of action is to be back on the tour either in Miami or in Monte Carlo.
