“Federer Has Always Been an Idol”: Stefanos Tsitsipas on Novak Djokovic Breaking Roger Federer’s Record

Over the years, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have dominated the headlines in the men’s game. However, in recent years, the Serbian machine has broken the Swiss superstars’ records. As we’ve entered into the first week of March, Djokovic equaled Federer’s record of being the World No. 1 for 310 weeks. In the following week, he will top the charts and surpass Roger.
Recently, Greek tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas spoke highly about the two legends in the sport. During his childhood, it was the Swiss ace, Roger Federer who he looked up to. Nonetheless, he has been amazed by what Djokovic has achieved in the last 7-8 years and states he raises his game with each year passing by.

The 22-year-old Greek athlete said, “It’s unbelievable. Federer in my eyes has done incredible things in tennis. Not that Djokovic hasn’t done it, but for me, Federer has always been an idol I grew up with. The things Djokovic has accomplished later. The last 7-8 years are unthinkable. It has raised its level so much, every year it seems to get better. All I can say is a big thumbs up.”

Speaking about the new generation, Stefanos remains optimistic and feels the new lot of players can do something similar to what these greats (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) have done.

The 2021 Australian Open semifinalist further added, “I think the new generation could do something similar, I do not think anyone 15 years ago expected Federer to surpass the Sampras record. It is difficult to predict what will happen. We as a new generation have many players. that they can offer in tennis.”

Reflecting on his performance at the Australian Open 2021, Tsitsipas exited in the semifinal this year. During his journey, he registered an impressive victory against Rafael Nadal. In the match, he came back from two sets down, to eventually seal the match in his favor.
