For a long time now, we have seen the dominance of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic or the ‘Big 3’. Even though all men are above the age of 30, they are still beating players much younger than them. This has raised the question – when is the NextGen going to take over? Nobody knows the answer but Boris Becker is hoping that it will happen while the ‘Big 3’ is still strong. Check it out.

On Eurosport Germany’s Vocal Podcast, Boris Becker talked a lot about the NextGen. He started off by talking about how players in his time were different as he said,

Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic are incredibly strong and have been doing so consistently for almost 15 years. On the other hand, the young players might not be good enough. In my generation, there were 20 and 21-years old players who won Grand Slam tournaments.”

The German himself was a very young Grand Slam champion winning his first title at the age of 17. He is hoping that there will be players who will do something like this while the ‘Big 3’ are still playing well as he said,

I would like to see this change happening while the big three are still strong, not when they are old and fragile and have retired from tennis. If the US Open or Roland Garros still take place this year, I would like to see another final between Nadal against Thiem. Maybe then the Austrian will win. I would like to see that.”

Boris Becker’s wish might come true as the NextGen are very close to winning their first Grand Slam. Dominic Thiem has reached 3 Grand Slam Finals and nearly won his last at the Australian Open. Along with him, Daniil Medvedev also reached a Grand Slam final at the 2019 US Open where he lost narrowly to Rafael Nadal.

Clearly, we are going to see the NextGen break the long reign of the ‘Big 3’ soon. And many people will be hoping that they will do that when the ATP Tour returns from its suspension in August.
