“Feels Borderline Criminal”: Husband Alexis Ohanian on Unfair Treatment Serena Williams Received in Jennifer Capriati Match

American tennis superstar Serena Williams has been of great value to the sport and has conquered uncharted waters, winning 23 Majors and multiple Olympic Gold medals. During the early stages of her career, however, she had to battle various difficulties in her path.
Recently, in a podcast, Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian recalled an incident during which Williams was treated in an unfair manner. It was a match against former American player Jennifer Capriati. During the match, the majority of line calls were unfairly going against her.

Speaking on that match, Alexis said, “I saw a clip of the Capriati match and I’m just like how is no one saying anything. How are the commentators not saying anything? Like Serena is getting clearly balls in that they are calling out and vice versa. She’s getting all these calls against her like this is absurd. You have one job and you’re messing it up.”
On seeing the clip, he felt the injustice done to the American player may have been going on for longer. He felt it was an act of injustice and sympathized with her fans and even termed the treatment ‘criminal’.

Reflecting back to tennis and the current season, Serena reached as far as the semifinal at the Australian Open. She withdrew from the ongoing Miami Open and will look to resume her season on the clay-courts.
