Earlier, Fernando Alonso pitched an Ask Me Anything session on Instagram and the fans immediately jumped in. Some of the questions asked, pertained to his life away from Formula One. However, some did ask if he would ever return to Formula One. In fact, one question referred to Nico Rosberg wondering if Alonso would return to F1 with Mercedes.
Normally for any driver, jumping into a top tier team like Mercedes would be an instant yes. However, Fernando Alonso is not in a hurry to come back any time soon and admitted that if he did, everyone would surely know.
He said, “I’ve been surprised a bit how many people talked about that recently. I had the best first half season possible. Winning a World Championship, Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans… If one day I decide to come back, you will know it”
Fernando Alonso had been linked to various top teams as the rumour mill continued to churn. The likes of Red Bull and Ferrari were thrown in the mix to sign the veteran Spaniard. However, the Ferrari dream return was dashed when they reaffirmed their commitment to Sebastian Vettel and Charles LeClerc.
Speaking to Sports Mole, Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto said, “When did Ferrari win? With Michael and Eddie, with Michael and Rubens, with Kimi and Felipe. With a first driver and a second driver. We see Charles (Leclerc) as our team leader of the future. We have a strong driver duo already and I see no reason to change anything about it.”
“I have known Sebastian since our days at Toro Rosso. From outside, much cannot be seen, but Sebastian remains at the center of our project.”
Even Red Bull flatly admitted that Fernando Alonso was not on their radar and are perfectly happy with Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly.
