Charles Leclerc must take care of his shortcomings and challenge Lewis Hamilton for the 2020 Formula 1 driver’s title, according to former World Driver Championship winner Jenson Button.

Button was talking about Ferrari F1 and Leclerc’s chances in the championship with the Daily Mail team.

He said, “Charles has gone through that honeymoon period at Ferrari and now it is about knuckling down. This year has got to be the year he fights for the championship.”

Charles Leclerc took pole position in seven races and two victories while outscoring his much-experienced teammate, Sebastian Vettel. He scored 264 points to Vettel’s 240, which strengthen his position in the team as he moved from Scuderia’s number two driver to leveling up with Vettel by season’s end.

Ferrari F1 hasn’t gad a great start of the 2020 season. First, the car’s initial design was reportedly plagued with issues. After that, the new SF1000 is struggling to match pace with the likes of Mercedes F1.

“I really think they will pull it together and take it to Mercedes,” he said.

He believes that Ferrari won’t face any team order issues that affected their performance in multiple races. Henceforth, both drivers will have a better understanding of the inter-team dynamics.

He stated that at the beginning of the season there were a few races where Charles committed many errors. He had great speed yet he was making some mistakes which impacted the race results. And very often Charles apologized saying, “oh sorry guys, that was my fault”.

Button thinks that initially Sebastian was surprised by Leclerc’s pace and was resistant to the changing team dynamics. At the same time, Button sympathizes with Vettel for losing his number one driver status but suggests that he has no choice but to accept the new team dynamics.

“When you are beaten by a young kid in your team it hurts, a lot. How many hours he has put into working with Ferrari, four world championships with Red Bull, that really does hurt.”

He thinks that Vettel will bounce back and will make fewer mistakes in 2020. However, if he doesn’t he probably won’t be at Ferrari in 2021.

He added, “I think now they have a much better understanding of each other and I really feel they are going to be a strong team in 2020.”

In conclusion, he feels that both drivers should move past this inter-team battle and should focus more on challenging Lewis for the championship title.
