Former F1 Driver Demands Removal of DRS Amidst Promising New Era

The new era of F1 has seen some brilliant racing in the opening 2 rounds of the season. The new regulations have achieved what they wanted to achieve with following becoming easier producing better racing in general. Bahrain and Jeddah also saw more overtakes this year than the previous ones. With all that said, it has reignited the debate whether DRS (Drag Reduction System) should be a part of the sport or not.

The technology has had both its haters and admirers in the sport at the same time. It made racing more competitive and gave the chasing cars a chance in the previous eras. However, the new era of cars has made following easier and more predictable, leading to better racing.

Former F1 driver Jan Lammers has recently made some bold comments about DRS though. He believes having DRS in the sport is not required and said, “The person in second place should also have a chance, so then you have to drive those twenty-five or twenty kilometers faster on the straight. Of course that makes no sense and should actually out.” (quotes translated using Google Translate)

According to Lammers, overtaking is too easy with the DRS and a lot of the time does not showcase the driver’s skill. Moreover, he added that the opening races showed that it is time to get rid of DRS altogether.

Lammers also lauded the drafters of the new regulations saying, “I think that’s a good development. They succeeded in their aim to make racing closer and then Of course you can also have it as pure as possible”

Amid all the talk surrounding DRS, the current F1 drivers think it is still too soon to get rid of. Charles Leclerc rebuffed that stance as he believes that the sport will be too boring without it. His teammate Carlos Sainz also agrees. He said, “Without DRS it was impossible to overtake.”

Maybe a revised version of DRS could perhaps be the next step in the right direction. The race in Jeddah showed everyone how much the new regulations have helped racing this season.
