Naughty Dog’s recent announcement about the cancellation of The Last of Us Online took fans by surprise. For so long, fans patiently waited. The game was in development for a long time, so when Naughty Dog decided to halt development and focus on single player narratives, it hit fans hard. But while they have canceled their plans for TLOU online, fans have been asked to wait and see what the studio has planned next.

The multiplayer project would have been a change in pace, and would’ve introduced new characters even. And with TLOU 2 having seemingly wrapped up Ellie’s story, it was an opportunity for the developers to go in the direction of live service games. Now while fans continue to wrap their heads around the cancellation, a former Naughty Dog developer took to Twitter to share his opinion on the matter.

While fans might be emotional about the news, the studio is going with a more logical approach. Although they have announced the cancelation of TLOU Online, there are claims about more ambitious projects lined up for the future.

They released a statement in which they apologized for the cancellation. Further, they explained why. But they also shared some exciting news. They confirmed they are working on a new game.

Naughty Dog explains the reason for the cancellation while also confirming a brand new game

Naughty Dog acknowledged the anticipation around The Last of Us Online but made the difficult decision to stop its development. The news about the game’s cancellation came from Naughty Dog’s official blog. They shared a heartfelt message to their fans, explaining the situation.

A part of the statement read, “We’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to stop development on that game. We know this news will be tough for many, especially our dedicated The Last of Us Factions community, who have been following our multiplayer ambitions ardently.”

As the project moved towards full production, the ambitious scope of The Last of Us Online became apparent. Releasing and supporting the online game would have required committing all studio resources to post-launch content for an extended period, impacting future single-player game development.

“To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.”

In the end, the devs decided to focus on working on single-player titles and sticking to what they are best known for. However in the end, they shared some exciting news too.

“We have more than one ambitious, brand new single player game that we’re working on here at Naughty Dog, and we cannot wait to share more about what comes next when we’re ready.”

This falls in line with the fact that they have been working on a new IP. Further, fans have also been speculating a TLOU 3.
