Pierre Gasly believes his chance at Red Bull Racing in 2019 will be an opportunity for “payback” after being snubbed following his GP2 title success.

Gasly’s GP2 success made him Red Bull’s first junior to win the championship, but the season after, the Frenchman couldn’t secure an F1 seat with the Milton Keynes-based side and drove in Super Formula.

Carlos Sainz Jr. and Daniil Kvyat were kept by Toro Rosso, but the season after, Sainz switched to Renault and Kvyat was dropped due to a terrible run of form – paving the way for Gasly to become a Red Bull reserve driver essentially.

“I’m really happy to see it paying off now. I get great opportunities thanks to all of the hard work I’ve done in the past. I’ve been sometimes at the right place at the wrong time, and this time, I’ve been at the right place at the right time.

“My life has been pretty awesome in the past 13 months. It has not been always the case but I always felt like, ‘OK, if I keep pushing as hard as I can, and keep giving the maximum out of myself, good things are going to come’.”
