The Meijer LPGA Classic brings in miserable memories for Irish golfer Leona Maguire. The 28-year-old has never won the event and has finished runner-up twice in the last couple of seasons.

However, her record at the tournament is stupendous. While her stats don’t lie, can the World No. 21 manage to go one up this year?

The Duke University alum is into her fifth season as a professional and has already notched up a few records. She is the first-ever Irish golfer to win at the LPGA Tour, a feat she achieved at the LPGA Drive On Championship last year.

Moreover, her consistent performances have indicated a growing trajectory in her career. But Maguire has failed to get hold of any major championships thus far. And it can be attributed to her inability to win preceding tournaments. A win in these tournaments can boost anyone’s confidence going into the major spectacles.

If truth be told, the Meijer LPGA Classic, which happens right before the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, has been a thorn in Maguire’s destiny, with two consecutive runner-up finishes derailing her title charge.

How did Leona Maguire finish second twice?

The first of the second-place finishes occurred in 2021 when Maguire outperformed her demons to card a 23-under-par 265. However, the talented Nelly Korda had other plans in that edition. Maguire finished solo second after falling short by two strokes and pocketed a cool $214,000 for her podium finish.

The story played out in a similar fashion the next year in a manner of speaking, where Maguire shot a final round 65 to get into a playoff with Jennifer Kupcho and Nelly Korda. But the Irish golfer faltered again as Kupcho took the plaudits this time.
