In a press conference post announcement of the team, he was asked about his choice of picking up rookies who don’t have as much experience. Donald had anticipated questions of this nature in advance.

He defended his choice by giving the break-up of the team which is four rookies and eight experienced players. “I don’t think it’s an inexperienced team by any means. If you look at the number of Ryder Cups, we would be at 21, while the US would be at 17,” he said.

He also took pride in the presence of young players in the team. “They are fearless, and they are excited to get to grips with experiencing what a Ryder Cup is.” He pointed out that he himself was a rookie when he made his debut in 2004.

Despite his confidence, Luke Donald has faced substantial criticism for his selection of the six players. Many golf enthusiasts have questioned the rationality of his choices. The harshest critique has come from the LIV golfer Richard Bland. 

Richard Bland pointed out that Shane Lowry was picked over Adrian Meronk which was not a great call according to him. Adrian was tied for 13th at Omega European Masters. He also won an event on the very course where the Ryder Cup will take place.
