Why does the defending champion of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Brooks Koepka, finds his position in the Official World Golf Rankings list is embarrassing? Is it because he had a poor performance last year?

The once World No. 1 currently ranks at 20th in the OWGR list. Although it is not that bad ranking considering he is the 20th best golfer among the thousands, Brooks thinks it is embarrassing for him to rank at a low number.

Brooks Koepka explains the reason for his downfall!

The 31-year-old Koepka had an incredible career soon after he turned pro in 2012. He had won fifteen titles worldwide throughout his career. Although he had only won eight of the PGA Tour titles, it is worth mentioning that four out of them are major championships.

Notably, he won two majors twice; the US Open in 2017 and 2018 and the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019. The only championship he had won, which is not a major, was the WM Phoenix Open; he won it in 2015 and 2021.

Even though he had a great career start, he hasn’t had another win after last year’s Phoenix Open. And that resulted in his fall at the OWGR, which the golfer finds embarrassing. He said, “That’s embarrassing to be 20th, I feel like.” He explained that his injuries were the reasons for his poor performance at the championships. “A lot of it has to do with injury, man. I’ve been hurt, on the sidelines, not playing, playing through injury; you can’t compete with guys out here.”

Injuries of Koepka

“I am like glass,” Brooks said. He was talking to the press conference before the last Ryder Cup when he talked about his injuries. “Left knee, right knee. I am broken, man,” he added. 

The injuries on his wrist had caused Brooks to withdraw from the Tour of Champions of last year. Brooks’ injuries on his wrist had been with him from late 2017 as he took a break for two months to heal his partially torn tendon on his left wrist. Brooks also had hip and knee injuries in 2019. The injuries cost him the FedEx championship and the US Open of 2020.
