We would be lying if we told you that Charley Hull has never been as close to winning a major as she was at the 2025 AIG Women’s Open. As she admitted, she has one of the highest runner-up finishes among women’s golf in majors at four. She is second only to Ayako Okamoto, who has finished in second place on six different occasions. But that hasn’t made her quit her dream of winning a major once in her career. And Hull expressed the sentiment recently during an interview.

Hull joined Kelly Cates for the latest episode of The Pursuit on YouTube. During one of the segments, the English pro was describing her recent struggles: “British Open, last week, I didn’t have the best preparation coming into it. Obviously, I was ill. I hurt my back.” Just a few weeks before the AIG Women’s Open, Hull had fainted during the first round of the Amundi Evian Championship. And that was the beginning of all her health troubles.
Not long after, she tore a muscle in her back while picking up a box to put in her car. She also hurt her ankle during her event. And if that wasn’t enough, Hull admitted that her health conditions didn’t allow her to get enough practice. “For the British Open, I just grinded, and grinded, and grinded, with my coaches to get a swing feel. And then I’ve come second. I nearly won it on Sunday. So it shows you, if you just carry on grinding it and working on it, you’re going to get good.”

Famous for her extreme workout regime, it’s no surprise that Hull believes hard work can overcome all obstacles. Even if she hasn’t won a title in a few years, she has still remained quite consistent as a top performer on the LPGA Tour. It’s evident that her “grinding” is paying off in some way, even if it’s not earning her titles. And it’s not like she’s not getting close to wins.

Charley Hull is a major performer at the biggest stage
Charley Hull may only have two LPGA Tour titles to her name. And none of them might be majors. But that doesn’t me the English pro doesn’t know how to perform at the biggest stage of women’s golf. Speaking about her record in the majors, Hull said, “I see statistics. I’ve got the most runner-up finishes in majors in the past 10 years out of anyone on the men’s Tour and women’s Tour. That’s an achievement in itself.”

Yes, it’s true. After finishing 2nd in the 2025 AIG Women’s Open, Hull has now achieved the highest runner-up finishes in majors in the last decade. In the history of women’s golf, she is only second with four runner-up finishes to Ayako Okamoto’s six. Despite the cursed record, Charley Hull is still hopeful. “I’m so close, and I will get there one day,” she said to close the segment as she remained confident about crossing the finishing line soon.

Charley Hull: The queen of runner-up finishes or a major champion in the making?
Have an interesting take?
For now, she will have to remain content with breaking her winless streak. Thankfully, she achieved that feat at the 2025 Kroger Queen City Championship as she beat the world #1, Jeeno Thitikul, to capture the title. With the year she is having, it won’t come as a surprise if fans get to see Hull win more frequently in the coming years.
