“Great at golf, not at lifting the Wanamaker Trophy,” said golf broadcaster for the PGA Tour, Jeff Eisenband. He had two pictures attached to his tweet. One showed Collin Morikawa‘s shocked face as he dropped the lid while hoisting the PGA Championship title up. In almost a deja vu situation, Scottie Scheffler recreated the incident at Quail Hollow just minutes ago after he won his first PGA Championship. Both individuals dominated the field, but were too tired to hold up the iconic Wanamaker Trophy safely.

It had been 5 years since he made that mistake. But the hilarious scene of Morikawa still lived fresh in Eisenband’s mind. He was not the only one who remembered it. As part of the 2025 PGA Championship commentary team, Jim Nantz had a first-hand experience of what happened at Quail Hollow. As soon as the lid slipped off the trophy, Amanda Balionis said, “Jimmy, I guess you can’t be great at everything!” After a short giggle, the Nantz replied, “That happens. We’ve seen it. Morikawa and others,” as he recollected the 2020 PGA Championship winner’s iconic reaction to dropping the lid at TPC Harding Park.

Having ended the round a few hours before Scheffler, Morikawa must have already reached home by now after a disappointing performance, finishing at 50th. But when Golf on CBS dropped the video of Scheffler’s glorious & hilarious moment along with Nantz’s commentary, he couldn’t help but respond to it. “Yes. Yes, it does. Congrats Scottie 👊🏼,” remembering the embarrassing situation himself while also congratulating Scottie Scheffler for his big win.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Collin Morikawa: Big wins and small fumbles

They might seem like big drops, but Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler dropping the lid of the Wanamaker Trophy was nothing compared to what Walter Hagen did with it. The late legend lost the trophy for many years before it mysteriously reappeared in 1930. Having said that, Hagen had a dominating run in the major event back in the 1920s. Scottie Scheffler also dominated the 2025 PGA Championship with his brilliant performance in the penultimate round. The world no. 1 managed a 6-under par 65 on Saturday to gain a 3-stroke lead against the field. While Scheffler maintained his score, finishing at par in the final round, everyone else on the field failed to catch up with him, increasing his lead by 5 strokes. Scottie became the first golfer since 1983 to win by 3+ strokes.

Collin Morikawa had a drastically different run at the 2020 PGA Championship. Going into the last round, he was 2 strokes away from the 54-hole leader, Dustin Johnson. Interestingly, Scheffler was closer to the top at TPC Harding Park, as there was only a one-stroke deficit between him and the LIV Golf pro. While the Dallas native did manage to add 2 more strokes to the score, Morikawa’s mammoth 6-under par 64 to end up 2 strokes clear against the rest of the field. Despite the difference in their run, Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler will have more than one thing to laugh about when they do meet up to celebrate the latter’s big win.
