After four seasons, LIV Golf is still going strong and garnering consistent views for its events. They might not be getting millions of fans tuning in every week like the PGA Tour. But nearly half a million still want to watch Bryson DeChambeau & Jon Rahm compete with each other around the world. With such big names in their roster, Donald Trump believes that LIV Golf is here to stay despite the $1.4 billion losses they have suffered. Recently, he provided Brandel Chamblee with his take on LIV Golf’s future.

Chamblee joined Trey Wingo for a podcast to discuss the analyst’s recent round of golf with President Donald Trump. During one of the closing segments, Chamblee told Wingo, “A year or two years ago, I played with President Trump, and the whole day we talked about LIV. One of the things he said to me, I know we disagree on LIV, but let me tell you why LIV is going to stick around. Yasir (Al-Rumayyan), the gentleman who runs PIF, loves golf more than you and I do.”
Even Chamblee couldn’t believe what the President had just said. Knowing how often Trump plays golf and his own expertise in the sport, he could never believe that the PIF governor loved the sport more than them. However, there is one thing even Chamblee couldn’t disagree with. “They have $32 trillion worth of money in oil underneath that sand. And they absolutely need to diversify their economy for very specific geostrategic and long-term political reasons. They’re not going to abandon LIV. They’re going to stick around.”

Therein lies the real foundation of Saudi Arabia’s golf ambitions. The country’s wealth still depends heavily on oil and petroleum exports, but Vision 2030 aims to change that. Tourism and technology are key areas of focus, and golf fits neatly into both. PIF has already made progress with golf tourism, but building a sustainable ecosystem will take much more than hosting big-money tournaments.

According to Chamblee, “Maybe they improvise. Maybe they make the changes they need to make to be competitive with the PGA Tour, which would be having a Q-school, trying to develop their own stars, funding women’s golf, trying to create some organic way of developing golf within Saudi Arabia, having a huge philanthropic arm, changing the policies in their country that are still medieval so the West wouldn’t have to be gast that they are funding the game of golf.”

Chamblee argued that for the PIF to ever be seen as a genuine contributor to the sport, they would have to do much more than fund tournaments. “There’s a lot of things they would have to do on the way for us to sort of go, okay, we’re somewhat amenable to medieval policies in their country funding this game. But that’s a long way to go. And they don’t seem amenable to doing any of those things.” Until that happens, it would be difficult for the world to take LIV Golf seriously. And realistically speaking, it may take years for Saudi Arabia or the PIF to introduce such huge changes.
Having said that, there are always measures LIV Golf can take to ensure quicker success. In fact, there is one way they can gain success much more quickly. But for that, Yasir Al-Rumayyan will have to shake hands with President Donald Trump.
Can President Donald Trump help LIV Golf find success quickly?
Back in March 2025, it was revealed that President Donald Trump had arranged for Jay Monahan, Tiger Woods, and Yasir Al-Rumayyan to meet at the White House to discuss a possible merger. It seemed like the conversation was finally moving forward. But soon, reports came in that after their meeting. The PIF governor was left “gravely offended” by the PGA Tour’s valuation of LIV Golf of $500 million. Even though the Saudi-based league was not profitable, the PIF had still invested about $5 billion into it already.

Fast-forward to the present, and the new CEO, Brian Rolapp, has already made it clear that the PGA Tour will be moving ahead with its strategic plan without focusing much on the merger. Considering that most of its latest initiatives failed to increase its TV ratings and revenue, LIV Golf needs to find a way to fast-track its profits. And a merger with the PGA Tour would certainly help them achieve that.
The PIF can still focus on helping the league grow to compete with the PGA Tour while collaborating with them to develop a more profitable business model. It’s up to Yasir Al-Rumayyan if he wants to waste billions of dollars over the next few years to make major changes or find quick success now and use the capital to reinvest in the growth.
