Watching a new sport can be quite confusing for an outsider. Just like someone who’s never watched golf before could have many questions about the sport, golfers watching a new sport are flooded with questions too. And recently, a one-time PGA Tour winner found himself in that exact situation. The golf pro had taken to watching F1 and knew some about the race. But despite his question being a valid one, fans didn’t pass up the opportunity to publicly troll him.
Golf world laughs at the PGA Tour star’s question
Formula One’s first main race of the 2023 season took place today at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Among the millions that had tuned in to watch the event was the 2021 Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship winner, Joel Dahmen. And while watching the race, he had an absurd question that he needed answered immediately!

So, taking to Twitter, the golf pro wrote, “Why do sparks fly off the cars in F1?” However ridiculous the question seemed, it was quite understandable for someone new to the sport. And some fans understood that and went on to explain to him why the fiery phenomenon occurred.
Asking the right questions Joel

Skid plates under the car get too close to the ground when the cars are loaded by the downforce
— Will (@HeyCrude) March 5, 2023
They bottom out.. they have a wooden plank that has brackets that hit the ground
— Gar (@theonegl) March 5, 2023
Other fans chimed in, suggesting that the race was so boring by itself that the sparks were just for show to keep things interesting. They claimed that cars were made that way just to attract viewers and nothing more.
Visual stoke for viewership

titanium skid plates for visual pleasure. distracts us from the boring v6 engines that replaced the screaming v8s

Fans, to make it easier for the golf pro to understand, even explained it to him in golf terms. While a few spoke of how it was similar to an iron hitting a cart path, another stated that it was like crowds celebrating by taking off their shirts.
For the same reason sparks fly off the bottom of an iron when you hit off a cart path.

In golfing terms Joel… it's like hitting an iron off the cart path!! 🤣🤣
— Scott Taylor (@scotttaylor1969) March 5, 2023
It's like when your buddy makes a putt on a hole and everyone decides to take their shirts off to celebrate… just for show. 🤣

But some fans couldn’t pass up the prime opportunity to troll Dahmen. Laughing at his absurd question, they commented on the most absurd things, suggesting that the race was played like a video game and that it was because cars fell in love that sparks flew. One can’t help but deny that the fans were quite innovative!
The goal is to get one of the sparks into the gas tank of a car behind, it's like Mario Kart

Sparks fly when two of the cars fall in love
