The packed field at Quail Hollow is expected to deliver some outstanding strokeplay this week. With the likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Bryson DeChambeau all fighting for the 2025 PGA Championship, fans can expect to see some emphatic drama and nail-biting moments from North Carolina. Whether they are at McIlroy’s favorite golf course or sitting in front of their screens, everyone is anticipating catching some exciting golf.
However, some golfers won’t be able to contribute to the action this weekend. Not because they are expected to underperform, but they won’t be at Quail Hollow altogether despite qualifying for the major. So, who are these 5 names that will be missing from the field at the 2025 PGA Championship?

Billy Horschel
World No. 24, Billy Horschel, earned an automatic qualification to the 2025 PGA Championship because of his ranking. He has also had a good enough season in 2025 to earn him a place in the major through the FedEx Cup rankings. Unfortunately, he still couldn’t take the trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, to challenge Xander Schauffele’s defence. But he did have a very valid reason to miss the PGA Championship.
As per reports, Horschel is suffering from physical complications that require urgent treatment. He had a hip surgery a few days ago and has since been in the rehabilitation stage of his recovery. There is no confirmation of when Billy Horschel will make a return to the Tour, but it certainly won’t be at Quail Hollow.
Sahith Theegala
Unlike Horschel, Sahith Theegala was supposed to be on the field for the 2025 PGA Championship this week. He even made it to the final field list that was released by the tournament officials a few days ago. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old revealed that he had sustained a neck injury in the last few hours. This hindered his chances of playing competitive golf at present. Hence, he had to withdraw from the second major of the season. However, Sahith Theegala’s exit has opened the gates for Alex Smalley to join the field instead.

John Daly
At 59, John Daly has accomplished many titles in golf. His win in the 1995 PGA Championship earned him a lifetime ticket to the tournament. He also has a similar arrangement with the Open Championship, which he won in 1995. However, when it came to the 2025 edition of the tournament, Daly was a bit skeptical about participating in it. Part of the reason might be because he has missed every cut in the majors since 2012. So, despite being acknowledged by the fans in Quail Hollow, John Daly has decided to skip the event altogether. What is he doing instead? Well, he has instead chosen to participate in the 2025 Regions Tradition, which is a major on the Seniors Tour.

Shaun Norris
Thanks to his OWG rankings, Shaun Norris had earned a confirmed place in the 2025 PGA Championship. A few days ago, it seemed like he would be taking a trip to Quail Hollow. However, reports released around May 7, 2025, revealed that Norris had declined the invitation to participate in the second major of the season. Like Horschel, the South African also had a very good reason to skip the tournament. Shaun Norris rejected an invitation to the 2025 PGA Championship as his mother was going through a health crisis. Specifics of her condition were not revealed, but the issue was severe enough for the veteran golfer to skip the major altogether. While the action at Quail Hollow will still proceed as scheduled, we do hope Shaun Norris’ mother also has a speedy recovery in the meantime.

Charley Hoffman
Would you believe it if we told you that Charley Hoffman is also suffering from an injury at the moment? Jay Monahan better be keeping a close eye on the situation, as the 48-year-old also sustained an injury. However, unlike Theegala, Hoffman had injured himself back in March 2025. He ruptured his Achilles tendon and has faced difficulty competing in PGA Tour events ever since. The 4-time PGA Tour winner was in good form this year as he had two top-10 finishes in 2025. However, it was too much for Charley Hoffman to handle during his trip at TPC Craig Ranch, and he hasn’t been in action since.
