Rory McIlroy entered 2023, ranked No. 1 on the Official World Golf Rankings. Fans were looking forward to the Irishman nabbing several new achievements but were soon deterred after he shockingly missed cuts at the Players Championship and the Masters. Another enormous disappointment soon followed suit, with McIlroy finishing T47 at the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

However, over the past few weeks, the golfer has had a resurgence of sorts. McIlroy has managed to finish top-10 in his past four outings, including a T7 finish at last month’s PGA Championship. Now, hoping to translate the near-misses into a win at the ongoing US Open, the 4-time major winner threw light on his strategy for the event on Friday!

Rory McIlroy gears up to end nine-year-long major drought

The last time World No. 3 Rory McIlroy won a major competition was at the Open Championship nine years ago. But, if his current form is any indication, the golfer may very well lift the American Open title at the Los Angeles Country Club on Sunday. In fact, the 34-year-old is currently drawing inspiration by revisiting his major-winning performances on YouTube!

I actually couldn’t believe how many irons and 3-woods and stuff I was hitting off the tee,” he told the press after a round of 67 on Friday while reminiscing about his performance at Hoylake in 2014. “It set something off in my mind about, you know how to do this. You know how to play smart. You don’t have to hit driver all the time.” McIlroy, who is averaging 326.2 yards with his driver this season, acknowledged that there are “more weapons” in his arsenal than just his driver.

In Friday’s press conference, the golfer also spoke on the elusive fifth major win that has been evading him for almost a decade. “No one wants me to win another major more than I do,” he shared. “I feel like I’ve showed a lot of resilience in my career, a lot of ups and downs, and I keep coming back.

With the US Open heading into the weekend, Rory McIlroy is tied at T3 with Xander Schauffele.

Things weren’t smooth sailing for the golfer on day 2 of the competition, but the resilient northern Irishman stayed put. After a handful of bogeys in his first few holes, McIlroy swiftly turned things around later in the day.

The 2011 US Open winner birdied four of his last five holes, even coming very close to making a hole-in-one at the par-three ninth. McIlroy’s second-round 67, combined with his first-round score, leaves him eight under par and in contention for the major title. He sits two shots back of Rickie Fowler, who shot impressive rounds of 62 and 68 to stay on top of the leaderboard after 36 holes.
