Following the same question, Daly also felt his distinguished appearance could be a reason for his popularity. “I don’t know, maybe because of the beard they think I’m really Santa Claus,” he said.

“But Justin Thomas told me I’m Bad Santa, so that’s out the window. I have no idea.”

On the tour since 1987, Daly has been accustomed to multiple nicknames. He was called ‘Long John’ in his early days owing to his tremendous driving distance off the tee. Thanks to his non-country-club appearances and larger-than-life personality, Daly has also been labelled the ‘Wild thing’.

John Daly discusses why he has a considerable number of followers

John Daly was taking questions at the pre-tournament press conference at the Shaw Charity Classic. On asked about his popularity among Gen Z, Daly bluntly replied, “No idea. I got no idea. I don’t know.”

“I think Chad does a great job with our T-shirt companies with the sayings on it; young kids like it,” he further added.

For the unversed, John Daly has a sponsorship deal with LoudMouth Golf. The clothing company takes care of Daly’s outfit during competitions. Often loud and colorful, Daly’s pants are unlike any and reminiscent of the style sported by 70s golfer Johnny Miller.

“No skeletons in my closet”: Daly opens up on his honesty

During the same press conference, Daly was asked why he retained a huge fanbase, at a time when his exploits are reserved for the less-watched Champions Tour and not in mainstream PGA events. He said, “I think because there’s really no skeletons in my closet. If I screwed up, I’ll honestly say I screwed up, and I think fans like that. I think I’m not — I’m not looking over my shoulder; are they going to know about this or that.”

He further added, “Everybody knows everything about me on this tour — my life, my ex-wives, everything — and it’s out there so there’s not really anything to hide. I think, hopefully, it’s the honesty.”

On asked whether he would change any of it, Daly replied he didn’t dare to.

“Yeah. My mom would have come out of her grave if I didn’t,” he said.
