John Daly is possibly one of the most popular golfers in the sport. The PGA Tour veteran has one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases among all the golfers. The fans love his cool and carefree lifestyle! And majority of the time when the golf great is spotted on the course, he’s surrounded by his loyal fans. It’s safe to say that his fans would go quite far for him; in fact, one once made him a huge $27,000 gesture!

A fan surprises John Daly with a huge offer

Back in December 2021, Daly sat down with the Nelk Boys for an episode of their podcast. There, Daly revealed a wild story about an incident that had occurred with him in the past. Like all his stories, this too involved alcohol and intoxication. But surprisingly, it wasn’t him who was drunk in it!

The golf underdog was at a pub paying off his tab of a whopping $27,000 when he came across an extremely drunk and generous stranger. “There was a drunk sitting behind me,” he stated. The intoxicated man was also a Daly fan, and he said to the golf pro, “John Daly, how you doing, man? I got your tab, don’t worry about it.” The man, of course, knew nothing about how whoppingly high it really was.

The two-time major winner politely refused the man and said, “You do not want this tab, dude, no way.” But the man was adamant and asked to look at the tab. “He looks at it… 27,000 dollars,” said Daly, mimicking his shocked face. “He looked back; he goes, I got you.” Surprisingly, the huge fan was still ready to take on the Tour of Champions star’s tab. It seemed like Long John had finally been left speechless!

The act of kindness was, of course, huge, and it was something Daly certainly deserved. After all, he is one of the most generous golfers himself. So perhaps what goes around comes around. There have been many stories of the golf great’s kind heartedness. One of the most touching of them came in 1991 when he won his first major.

A spectator at the event, Tom Weaver, was struck by lightning and killed in the storm that had plagued Indiana that week. And when Daly heard of this, he unflinchingly donated $30,000 of his winnings towards the college education of Weaver’s two daughters. This shows how generous the golf pro really was. Perhaps it is also the reason he has such loyal fans!
