Patrick Reed has been amidst controversies throughout his career, be it breaking rules of the sport or having an outburst. This was proved yet again at the first round of the 2022 Players Championship. Moreover, the 31-year-old professional found himself again in the limelight, but for the wrong reasons.

Golf can be a ruthless game sometimes, with a lip out from the hole to a bad shot. Professionals often find themselves in a frustrating position and sometimes have an outburst on the course. Patrick Reed had a similar instance in the first round of the 2022 Players Championship on Thursday.

Reed suffered an outbreak at the TPC Sawgrass on Thursday. Patrick had a rather tricky putt for birdie on the ninth hole, which just hit the lip of the cup and did not go in. In agony, Reed made an obscene gesture. As soon as he missed the birdie putt, he was seen saying, “F**k you” just as the cameras were moving away and showed his middle finger too.

Social media erupted with golf fans reacting to the vulgar gesture of Patrick Reed. The responses were filled with mixed reactions to his gesture and some of them even said to “Kick him off the Tour”.

However, this is not the only time Reed has done this. Back at the WGC HSBC Championship in Shangai in 2014, Reed had dropped a shot on the 10th hole and was seen abusing again. He said, “Nice f**king three-putt, you f**king faggot.” However, he also issued an apology for his abusive language.

Patrick Reed first-round at Players

On the business end, Reed had a pretty ordinary day on the golf course. The American professional carded a round of one-over-par, 73. His opening round included four bogeys on the front nine, as a result, moving out in four-over-par, 40. Patrick made a birdie and an eagle on the back nine.

As a result, carding a bogey less back nine. Well, I guess maybe it all added up for Reed in the first round on Thursday. Moreover, he needs a strong round on Friday to give himself a shot at the title.
