Fresh off the bus after singing Team Europe’s iteration of ‘Zombie’ by The Cranberries for Rory McIlroy, Hatton was eager for individual success. For that, he flew straight to St. Andrews. Playing the second round of the 2025 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, he had put himself in a great position to go for the top of the table. He was only five strokes off the top of the table as he was hitting the approach shot at the par-5 18th hole at the Kingsbarns Golf Links. However, the moist conditions in Scotland made his hand slip from the club, and he mishit the stroke. Then, as many of his fans would expect, he reacted very strongly to it.

Immediately after contact, he screamed in frustration, “It f***ing slipped out my f***ing hands,” in typical Hatton fashion. The ball landed right of the green in the taller grass, and he ended up missing what could have been a very easy birdie. That would have put Tyrrell only four strokes away from his Ryder Cup teammate, Robert MacIntyre, at the top of the table. Instead, he remained at T23 as he ended the round long before the play was suspended, before Brooks Koepka & Co. could complete their 18 holes.
Coming back to Hatton’s outburst, this is not the first time he has lost his cool on the course. In fact, he’s infamous for dropping F-bombs when things aren’t going his way. He was heard cursing on the hot mic during the 2024 LIV Golf Miami event for a failed drive. He said, “F—king what a wank bounce that was, if it f—king bounces left it’s fine… F—K YOU! The f—king c—t,” after the shot, which caught a lot of attention. And it was just one of the many incidents he has been involved in. Playing The Open at Royal Portrush in 2025, Hatton was asked about his meltdowns and temper tantrums. To which, he confessed, “I’m not going to change. It’s just how I am, how I play,” while speaking to the BBC.

Netizens bash Tyrrell Hatton for not being able to keep his cool in Scotland
Tyrrell Hatton is no stranger to letting his emotions take over on the course. And fans often criticized him for acting out when his peers had managed to keep calm in similar situations. This time as well, this was the case.
“My goodness. Shouldn’t golfers behave better than that?” they wrote.

We couldn’t agree more. Being a gentleman’s sport, golfers should certainly present themselves better in front of an audience. However, as anyone who plays golf would also be aware, it can also be extremely frustrating at times. And many of the casual players are also guilty of losing their cool when they are supposed to be enjoying themselves on a Sunday. So, for someone who plays it professionally, to lash out after a mishit should still be acceptable.
After everything that happened at Bethpage, one of the followers said, “Strange, just one week ago this type of language was seen as an abomination on the entire sport of golf. Tom Watson apologized on behalf of an entire nation because of it. This week, look at his passion.” They believe that his throwing out abuses in the air is the same as the New York crowd targeting their heckling towards the family of a pro golfer. That’s why Tom Watson had to decide to step in and apologize to the entire Team Europe squad.
Someone sarcastically wrote, “I’m told this type of language on the golf course is unacceptable and should be held to a higher standard.” They are probably still bitter about all the heat that New York fans received for their heckling. However, it’s worth noting that many of the more creative efforts by the spectators at Bethpage were acknowledged by the Team Europe pros. They only complained about the extremely rude and personal comments.

Watching Hatton’s meltdown might also be entertaining for some, as one of them wrote, “That was my biggest disappointment from attending last week’s Ryder Cup; not seeing a Hatton meltdown, lol.” They were hoping to watch the Englishman lose his cool in New York. However, he was calm as a cucumber when representing Team Europe. But he’s back to his authentic self now that he’s playing individual championships again.
Lastly, someone was actually happy to see Tyrrell Hatton lose his cool after the mishit. They said, “Hatton has no filter! 😄 one of us!” Just like every Sunday golfer, even the LIV Golf pro lashes out when the club slips out of his hand. And the fan found it hilarious that he could relate to the Englishman because of it.
