The 2025 PGA Championship will feature 16 LIV Golf pros. Some of the biggest names like Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Jon Rahm, and others are all expected to compete for the major title. Joaquin Niemann has also earned a qualification due to his excellent form recently. But there is one name that has not made the list despite showing consistency in the 2025 season. Rippers GC player and fifth-ranked player on the LIV Golf leaderboard, Lucas Herbert, will not be taking a trip to Charlotte this week.
The 29-year-old has had an outstanding year with three top-4 performances. He was also consistently finishing in the top quarter of the table during his time on the PGA Tour. And yet, Herbert has failed to get a ticket to Quail Hollow. The Australian expressed his disappointment in an interview recently as he spoke about the limited opportunities he receives being a LIV Golf player.
Flushing It wrote, “Lucas Herbert has been playing some of the best golf of his career this season, sitting 5th on the LIV Standings, but he didn’t earn an invite to the PGA Championship.” The golf experts confirmed that Herbert is not a part of the field at Quail Hollow. Speaking to Flushing It, the Rippers GC pro said, “That was the thing that we knew when we signed up with LIV, that majors would be the issue. They have the right to invite, or not invite, whoever they want. Obviously, I’ve been playing great this year, and I would have loved to have played. But a big part of why I’ve played so well this year has been being in a team environment with Ripper.” It seems that he understands that he hasn’t earned his way to the 2025 PGA Championship. To receive an exemption from playing in the major is out of his hands.

Despite that, he doesn’t seem to regret jumping ship in 2024. Speaking about playing in the LIV Golf league, Herbert said, “Having an off-season to be able to do a lot of work in the gym and also a lot of equipment testing has helped too. We were never really afforded that luxury playing on the PGA Tour. You just couldn’t have gotten away with playing that little golf, unless you’re Adam Scott, or these guys like Rory, who is able to guarantee he’s able to go and win an event every year.” He believes that you need to be at a certain level in your game to have the luxury to take a break from the PGA Tour, and only top players like Rory McIlroy or fellow Australian pro, Adam Scott, can afford that. While playing for LIV Golf, Herbert can enjoy a four-month break as the season concludes in September and the next season tees off in February the following year.
Confessing his struggles in the PGA Tour, the Australian national said, “It’s very hard to turn down events (on the PGA Tour). So an off season and the freedom with the club contracts, being able to go and test equipment, that massively helped too. So it’s a double-edged sword. I wouldn’t have been good enough to qualify for the PGA Championship without LIV anyway.” Despite getting more opportunities to qualify for majors, the PGA Tour has a very hectic schedule that golfers like Herbert need to keep up with. That would have made it difficult for him to make the 2025 PGA Championship even more challenging.

While he may not like watching his peers from the sidelines, we’re sure Lucas Herbert will be cheering for them from afar. Having said that, let’s see which LIV Golf player has made the 2025 PGA Championship field.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Lucas Herbert's exclusion from the PGA Championship a sign of bias against LIV Golf players?
Have an interesting take?
Who will Lucas Herbert be supporting at the 2025 PGA Championship?
There is no question that Lucas Herbert will be cheering for his Rippers GC teammate, Cameron Smith, at Quail Hollow. The team captain is a 1x major winner himself as he captured the 2022 Open Championship by beating Rory McIlroy. Smith has also performed exceptionally well in the last three LIV Golf events, finishing in the top 10 in all of them. Apart from his team captain, Herbert will also follow the likes of Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka. All three have won majors in the last few years and are strong contenders in Charlotte.

Considering the outstanding form that he has been in, Joaquin Niemann can also pull off a surprise and win his first major next weekend. Alternatively, John Caitlin, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Tyrrell Hatton, Martin Kaymer, Tom McKibbin, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Richard Bland, Dean Burmester, and David Puig complete the list of 16 players who will be playing in the 2025 PGA Championship. The only question that remains is, can any of them win the major event?
