Golf rarely features differently-abled players making it to the top. However, Irish golfer Brendan Lawlor is gradually changing that perception. The 26-year-old became the first-ever professional golfer to compete at a DP Tour event, which garnered plaudits from fans worldwide.

However, those cheers soon became a source of nasty comments from the pessimistic faction of the internet. Having participated in the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan, Lawlor received ridicule and insults for his disability, which forced the golfer to address the issue. He has since received countless support, with the latest one coming from LPGA’s star golfer, Charley Hull.

Hull also had sympathetic words for the DP Tour golfer. “As a fellow ISPS Handa Ambassador, I am proud to see Brendan Lawlor breaking down barriers through the power of sport. Can’t believe the sick people who can find negative things to say. You have my full support,” she wrote in her story.

Understandably, Hull’s support seemingly raised awareness of the situation to a greater domain. But what caused the differently-abled golfer to receive a sudden wave of abuse?

Suffering from a growth-deficient hormone that stumped his height, Lawlor didn’t allow the weaknesses of his body to become a barrier to his golf dream. The Irish golfer rose through the ranks to become eligible for the DP Tour, while he has also played regularly on the EDGA Tour.

His most recent participation came at the ISPS Hand Championship, which was played overseas in Japan. While he couldn’t make the cut for the weekend, the DP Tour’s social media handles were full of Lawlor’s incredible feat.

Yet, some gloomy netizens were not impressed. They took the opportunity to make fun of Lawlor and his disability, which hurt the golfer. To address the terrible incident, the 26-year-old recorded a video of himself speaking about the issue, and how it could be a huge mental barrier to overcome.
