Is Luke Donald planning to make history? The Team Europe captain has had a massive influence on the squad’s success in Rome and New York over the last 4 years. He turned the squad into a remarkable unit that has each other’s backs and focuses on what’s best for the team. This has helped Rory McIlroy & Co. write their names in the history books in 2025. But will Donald also create a bit of history of his own in 2027?

Hours after the triumph at Bethpage, Luke joined Sky Sports for an exclusive interview to discuss Team Europe’s win in New York. During the conversation, the reporter asked him one question everyone wants to know the answer to: Will he be leading the squad at Adare Manor? Unlike the post-win response at Bethpage, Donald had a lot more to say this time around. But did he confirm his role in 2027?
“I haven’t really thought about it, to be honest. I kind of want to enjoy this moment, enjoy this one. I know there is a few boys that live around me in Florida. We might be celebrating this one for a while,” said the two-time Ryder Cup-winning captain. Looks like he’s still undecided whether he would take up the captaincy again. And having only won the Ryder Cup less than 24 hours ago, they certainly have a lot more to celebrate before worrying about the future.

However, it won’t be unrealistic to see Luke Donald return as the Team Europe captain in Ireland. After winning in Rome & New York, he became only the second European captain to win the Ryder Cup both home & away. Tony Jacklin achieved the feat for the first time in 1985 & 1987. Hence, he joined the record books with the fellow Englishman and one of the most legendary captains to lead the side. Although Captain America believes he definitely tops the list instead.

Having said that, there is one more record that Luke Donald can set if he does decide to continue his tenure. And that will confirm Bradley’s claims of him being the best European captain in history. What is it? Let’s take a look at the history books of the Ryder Cup.
What record can Luke Donald break if he takes up the captaincy in Ireland in 2027?
To think that Luke Donald wasn’t even the first choice for the captaincy role in the 2023 Ryder Cup seems absurd at this point. However, he came in as a replacement in August 2022 after the assigned captain, Henrik Stenson, decided to join LIV Golf. Ironically, LIV Golf players have played a major role in helping Donald dominate the Ryder Cup against Team U.S.
His overall approach towards captaincy in the 2025 Ryder Cup highlighted his attention to every little detail. Dylan Dethier of Golf Magazine reported all the changes the Team Europe captain made to ensure his players have the maximum comfort in the United States while they prepare for the Ryder Cup. He got the shampoos in all the hotel rooms changed for better quality products, replaced the beddings with comfier sheets, and covered the bottom of doors to ensure no light passes through when they are trying to sleep. These small changes ensured that when the players are in their downtime, they have the most relaxed and luxurious experience.
Looking at the bigger picture, both captains had faith in a bunch of players in the squad. But while Bradley blindly trusted a few players, Donald believed in data, proven track record, and form. That’s the primary reason Team Europe was able to dominate the team matches so efficiently, while the Americans were better in individual matches. On paper, Bradley’s side had better players. But the Europeans got along much better and knew just how to support each other to win points early in the event.

All this makes it evident that Luke Donald truly thrives in his role as the captain. And there is no question that he is extremely passionate about leading the team. With the Ryder Cup coming back to Europe, the Englishman will also have a shot at making history. No captain in the history of the Ryder Cup has led the team to victory three times in a row. Considering most of Team Europe is still relatively young, he can take the same team back to Adare Manor and write his name in the record books, going down as one of the best captains to ever lead the team and grace the Ryder Cup.
So, while he may be enjoying the celebrations right now, when the time comes to decide if he is going to lead the team, Luke Donald should definitely consider it.
