‘People Are Comfortable With It’: Amid USGA Controversy, LIV Golf Defector Backs Up His Products Format With a Bold Statement

LIV Golf revolutionized the world of golf when it introduced game play with three rounds and 54 holes. The golf world was always used to having pros play in a 4 round format, except, of course, on the senior circuit. And the concept of prime golfers playing just three days did not sit right. After all, change is hard! Hence, LIV’s introduction raised many questions about the format of the game. and stirred up the argument about 3-day vs. 4-day golf events. And recently, the back-to-back winner of the Saudi-backed league chimed in about the debate with his appearance on the ‘The Stripe Show’ podcast.

Recently, the host of the podcast, Travis Fulton, and the LIV Star shared their take on the hot topic. Others, including many big names in the golf world, also had tons to say about it.

The discussion about 3-day vs. 4-day golf events has been a recurring one. The Saudi-backed league was the one that went ahead and did something different in the golf world. The number of rounds played is one of the major differences between the two rival leagues, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.

Talor Gooch has been wound up in the USGA controversy since the rule change that made him ineligible for the US Open. Amid that controversy, he’s now also jumped in to weigh in on the format debate. During his recent appearance on the podcast, he was questioned about what he thinks about the format. Gooch said, “We think it’s easier to win a 3-day.”

ost Fulton explained that a player who is among the cream of players will want a 4-day event. “Why don’t we have 5-day tournaments?” questioned Gooch. “The reason we don’t is because of the way the tour was laid out,” replied Fulton.

Gooch added, “4 days is all we have known so people are comfortable with it.” He explained that for a major event like the Masters, 4 was the perfect number, but 3 fit well for other regular events.

The two-time LIV winner also shared the plight of the LIV golfers when it comes to the number of days they compete. It took the defectors lots of effort to overpower the rest in 4-day tournaments since they didn’t regularly play them. The LIV Golf star believes it is shameful that even after all those efforts, they were not considered for ranking points.

Taking forward the discussion between Gooch and Travis Fulton, another golf fan has shared their take.

One of the prominent Twitter pages, Pro Golf Critic, is indeed one of the biggest LIV supporters. The page has also shared its two cents about the ongoing discussion. He reposted the clip of the podcast and said that he felt 4 days should be reserved for majors. He also added that the pressure the pros feel is the same regardless of the number of days they play.

“To me, 3 days is much better. 4 days makes more sense with a cut but I’m good reserving that for the majors. Pressure just gets condensed & moved up. You feel like there’s no time to waste. Different feel. But final round pressure is the same,” he wrote on Twitter.

The page also noted that even the Hall of Famer, Tiger Woods, would have still won the same number of majors if the majors had been 3 round events, proving that the number of days didn’t determine a better class of golfers.
