In early June, the PGA Tour’s decision to enter into an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) came as a huge shock to many, especially players who had stayed loyal to the Tour and rebuffed offers from LIV Golf. Xander Schauffele was one of them.

Now, over a month into the $3 billion deal, the World No. 6 has shed light on how players’ relationships with PGA Tour chief Jay Monahan have taken a nosedive. Let’s dive in to find out more.

Xander Schauffele opens up about the aftermath of the deal that betrayed the likes of him and Tiger Woods

Back in 2022, LIV CEO Greg Norman revealed to Fox News that Tiger Woods had rejected an offer worth more than $700 million to join the Saudi-backed league. Another golfer who turned them down was Xander Schauffele. The 7-time PGA Tour winner even went on to refer to the money being offered as “obnoxious.”

After publicly rallying behind the PGA Tour in trying times, it is only normal for the likes of Tiger Woods and Schauffele to feel let down by the golf circuit’s decision to backtrack on its previous aversion to LIV and for not a single Tour player to be made aware of the situation! Many have since lashed out at the Tour, and on Wednesday, the 29-year-old joined in too. And it was the Tour chief, Jay Monahan, who was at the receiving end of his indignation.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the impending Scottish Open, Schauffele confirmed that players’ trust in Monahan had taken a hit. “Obviously he had some health issues. I’m glad that he said he’s feeling much better. But yeah, I’d say he has a lot of tough questions to answer in his return, and yeah, I don’t trust people easily,” he shared.

“He had my trust, and he has a lot less of it now. So I don’t stand alone when I say that,” confessed the 29-year-old. Just days after the controversial PGAT-LIV merger, Monahan abruptly stepped away from his position, citing medical reasons. He is now all set to resume his role in the office. And with that return, the likes of Schauffele expect answers!

Jay Monahan returns as PGAT commissioner following medical leave

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan will return to action on Monday, July 17. “Thank you for your support and leadership these last few weeks,” he wrote in a letter to the PGA Tour Policy Board. “I am deeply sorry that I haven’t been able to be with you during this time.”

The 53-year-old’s medical leave came a week after the PGA Tour and PIF struck an agreement to hold commercial operations for a single professional golf entity under a brand-new for-profit company. So far, the two sides have only entered into a framework agreement and ended all of their pending legal hostilities.

With Monahan’s return, the deal is expected to steadily take shape. But he will most likely have to address the complaints of aggrieved PGAT players first and foremost.
