There was a time when Phil Mickelson couldn’t contain his gambling addiction and lost millions in the process. He could afford it, considering the wealth he had already accumulated throughout his career. But Lefty was still cautious about his habit. Yet, he didn’t mind betting against Grant Horvat when the two faced off in the third match of their trilogy.

During the YouTube golfer’s latest video, Mickelson told Horvat, “I’m not a gambling man. I like to play for funsies. If I were to win and get the match to one and two, I would like a chance to pull even and maybe ahead. Play a couple of matches on courses that I grew up on, where I have a local knowledge advantage. Or go to some nice courses throughout the country to try to even the score.”
Horvat had already won both the previous matches they had played. This was supposed be the third match of the series, which was filmed on January 4, 2026. Yes, it occurred much before Mickelson had to step away from the course due to a family emergency.
As Mickelson stated, he wanted a chance to make a comeback in the contest between them. It was a fair request considering how dominant Horvat had been so far. Moreover, Lefty wasn’t asking for a straight victory, but the opportunity to play more matches to claim the win. But he didn’t expect Horvat to take things up a notch.
“If you win, I’ll take you out to dinner tonight. (But) If I’m able to pull this one off today, I would love to do a little road trip together. Maybe a three-course/four-course road trip of your four favorite courses. And I want to film them, and we’ll do 1v1. So we’ll fly around. I know you’re in the plane world. We might have to fire up the plane.”
Horvat offered a $1000+ dinner and an opportunity for Mickelson to make a comeback in exchange for Lefty to play three to four courses with him. And Mickelson did confirm that the YouTuber wanted him to fly them around in his “private jet.”
While Mickelson found it fair, Horvat also revealed that Jon Rahm had already invited all of them for a dinner that evening. So even if he loses, he didn’t really have anything to lose.

With such high stakes, both individuals gave it their best shot. And that affected the result.
Was Phil Mickelson finally able to beat Grant Horvat?
A six-time major champion going up against a YouTube golf content creator might seem unfair on paper. But those accolades would be just as deceptive as Grant Horvat’s offer to take Phil Mickelson for dinner.
Their first match was a closer contest with Mickelson scoring an even par. Horvat managed a 2-under par with a final hole birdie to take home the victory.
The second match between them wasn’t a close affair. And it favors the player, you would think it does. Horvat dominated the course and beat Mickelson by four strokes. He scored 5-under par with the LIV Golf pro ending at -1.
Playing their third match, they could only complete part of the round on Horvat’s channel. As the video concluded, the content creator was leading by 1 stroke. Both he and Mickelson confirmed that the rest of the video will be available to watch on the Phil Mickelson and the HyFlyers YouTube channel. With Lefty trying to pull one back, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the end.
