It was a ballistic ride for the Scottish fans as Robert MacIntyre clinched his second PGA Tour title in just three months. Even before the final round, the fans were enthralled to witness another Scottish pro after Colin Montgomerie (1999) won the Genesis Scottish Open and wanted MacIntyre to take the lead.

The 27-year-old won the Scottish Open with a stroke lead over Adam Scott, thanks to a controversial free drop at the 16th hole. Even while making the birdie putt on the final hole, MacIntyre was in tears and found himself on his knees crying. Moments later, the two-time PGA Tour winner was jumping in excitement, declaring he would celebrate the win like never before.

He told the PGA Tour, “I’m going to celebrate this one hard.” Later, in the press conference, expressed that the celebration might take such a huge notch that he might skip the practice round before the Open Championship. MacIntyre said, “I don’t think I’ll be in a fit state to get to Troon. I don’t think I’ll be legally able to drive.”

MacIntyre was elated with how things worked out in his favor, allowing him to win on his home soil. The spectators too screamed as loud as they could to celebrate the Scottish win after 25 years. However, the joy was slightly dampened as MacIntyre received some daunting remarks from the netizens.

Golf fans disparage Robert MacIntyre’s victory celebration

Per Rule 6-7, each pro has 40 seconds to take a shot, with an additional 10 seconds under certain conditions. Breaking this rule can result in a one or two-stroke penalty or, in extreme cases, disqualification. Notably, Robert MacIntyre has never been penalized for slow play or disqualified. He has always played within the allotted time. However, some fans still found his gameplay slow. They said, “I think The Open would be better of without Mr. Slowplay.” Another fan took a dig at MacIntyre and his gameplay. They taunted him, saying, “I could walk to Royal Troon in the amount of time this dude takes to hit a damn golf ball.” 

As previously reported, MacIntyre took a free drop on the 16th hole of the Scottish Open’s final round. His three metal spikes touched the sprinkler, and he asked the rule official if he could get free relief. Fortunately, he received the free drop and eagled that hole to be tied with Adam Scott. That was certainly the turning point of the final round, as two-stroke behind the Aussie pro there was no chance of MacIntyre winning the event.

Thus, this sure was frustrated with that and said, “Make sure you take another favorable drop at Troon.” And they were not alone who were pissed off with the free drop situation. This viewer was also shocked by the decision and suspected that MacIntyre may do the same while teeing up at the Open. They said, “Hey, I just stepped on a sprinkler head. Can I tee it up?”

With only two days remaining before the men’s last major tees off at Royal Troon, Robert MacIntyre’s victory at the Renaissance Club has likely given him better momentum and improved chances at the 152nd Open. However, he is not worried about the next event and instead wants to enjoy his current triumph. One fan, unlike the others who taunted Bob, appreciated that his victory upset many people, despite him not being at fault. They said, “Way to piss off all those jocks! Well played sir!”
