After two days of the 2025 Ryder Cup, it looked like Team Europe clearly had the title in the bag. But what happened on Sunday gave the Americans some hope of a comeback. They nearly covered the 7-point deficit and came close to stealing the title away at Bethpage. However, Scottie Scheffler & Co.’s efforts in the singles matches weren’t enough to overcome the huge margin the Europeans had created. But one of Team Europe’s vice captains revealed that things did get a little “uncomfortable” during the final day.

Edoardo Molinari joined Fried Egg Golf’s Joseph LaMagna for an interview to discuss their Ryder Cup success. At the beginning of the interview, the host inquired if Team Europe thought that Team U.S. might flip the script on Sunday. Molinari told LaMagna, “We got off to a good start on Sunday. The only issue was, we were up in a lot of matches, but everyone was 1UP in most of them, apart from Fitzy. So, all the games looked like they were going down the last few holes.”
“I guess our players were a bit tired after a long week and having to deal with everything they had to deal with. I remember I was following Fitzy, and then I moved up to Justin Rose’s game when he was playing 11 & 12. And at that time, we started losing a few holes here and there. All of a sudden, from being one up, almost all the matches were either tied or one down. That’s a very uncomfortable feeling. You almost feel like the ground is shaking a bit and falling away from your feet.”

Unlike the foursomes & fourball matches, Team Europe couldn’t extend their early lead of 1UP to larger deficits. Everyone who was 1UP early on Sunday nearly ended up losing or tying their match in the end. Even Matt Fitzpatrick, who went 5UP after 7 holes against Bryson DeChambeau, ended up sharing points with the LIV Golf pro. Star performers like Tommy Fleetwood & Justin Rose also lost their individual matches. Rory McIlroy ended up losing his match against Scottie Scheffler. That put a lot of pressure on Luke Donald & the rest of the squad. The only saving grace for the Europeans was Ludvig Aberg, who captured a win against Patrick Cantlay to secure them a vital point.

However, in the end, Team Europe did overcome the threat and stopped Scottie Scheffler & Co. from making a comeback. And they ended up creating many beautiful memories for everyone. In fact, Edoardo Molinari recollected some of the best moments he could remember from Bethpage.

Edoardo Molinari remembers the triumph over Scottie Scheffler & Co. at Bethpage
All the heckling & abuse aside, Team Europe created history at Bethpage by beating Scottie Scheffler & Co. And everyone, including Luke Donald & Edoardo Molinari, was overjoyed about achieving the amazing result. When the Italian pro was asked about what his favorite moment was in New York, he replied, “There’s a few. There’s the first morning. It didn’t go as well as Rome, but it was a very good start. We were not scared, but we were probably fearing of falling behind early, and then with the crowds and everything that was going on, it would have been an extremely difficult week.”

Considering how the fans heckled the Europeans when they were dominating the home team, it’s hard to imagine how much worse things would have been if the away team was actually losing in the first couple of days. But the first day foursomes matches really gave the team a lot of confidence. “After that first morning, it’s like we’re in the game here and we have a great chance. So first morning, a lot of things happened. Sunday afternoon is something that ended up well for us, but for a good hour and a half, we were just not very comfortable in our position.”
Even the best moments for Edoardo Molinari & Team Europe were overshadowed by intense competition. But then again, that was what they were there to do. Hence, they were able to prevail in the end. Maybe that was the secret behind their success at Bethpage. What do you think?
