Since its inception in 1934, there have been 89 editions of the Masters Tournament. It has produced 54 different Green Jacket winners. 18 of them won the ANGC event more than once. The prestigious list includes the likes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and many more greats of the game. The last addition to that list was Scottie Scheffler in 2024. And if the world No. 1 captures the 2025 PGA Championship, then he will join another elite list of golfers that includes the above-mentioned names.
Along with multiple wins at ANGC, Woods, Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, and Co. also have other major wins to their name. Unfortunately, Scheffler has not achieved that feat yet. But considering his position at the end of the third round at Quail Hollow, he might very well reach the goal this evening. The 14-time PGA Tour winner is close to winning his 15th as he ended the penultimate round with a three-stroke lead. And as Kyle Porter tweeted a few hours ago, winning the Wanamaker Trophy will make him match his idol, Tiger Woods’s record.
The tweet read: “Players to win multiple Masters and three or more majors overall. Jack, Tiger, Palmer, Player, Snead, Faldo, Phil, Demaret, Hogan, Watson, Nelson, Seve, Scottie (if he wins tomorrow) Insane, insane list.” In fact, Scheffler is the only golfer on the field in Charlotte who can achieve that feat. As Rory McIlroy only won his first Green Jacket this year, he will have to wait for his next trip to Augusta to try and achieve this feat. Until then, the 3-time consecutive POTY will have 3 shots at making it happen. If he somehow fails at Quail Hollow, then he will also get the opportunity in the U.S. Open or the Open Championship.

Having said that, what are the chances of Scottie Scheffler lifting the Wanamaker Trophy this evening?

Does the big lead favor Scottie Scheffler’s recent win record?
Rory McIlroy is known for fumbling huge leads on the final day of majors. He admitted that the infamous 4-stroke advantage he lost in the 2011 Masters still haunts him. McIlroy carried the burden of it for 14 years before finally breaking the curse back in April 2025. However, his rival, Scottie Scheffler, is known for cashing in on 54-hole advantages. At least that is what he has done since 2024.
Scheffler’s win at Augusta National came after he had already led the field into the last round of the event. Interestingly, details revealed by Golf on CBS suggest that the Dallas local has also won every other event on the PGA Tour where he has led in the third round since then. He has played in four more events as such, including the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and won each one of them. Hence, it won’t come as a surprise if he does it for the 6th consecutive time at Quail Hollow. That would confirm Scottie Scheffler’s place in the elite list that event Grand Slam Rory can’t make.
